Rabat — Maroc

Morocco has a good network of motorways and national roads. A few rules and local habits are all you need to drive calmly from Marrakech to Tangier.

Key rules

Traffic drives on the right. General limits are 120 km/h on motorways, 100 km/h outside towns and 60 km/h in towns, unless signs say otherwise. Seat belts are compulsory front and rear, and using a phone while driving is forbidden.

Take care at roundabouts: priority is often shown by signs and habits vary. Speed checks are frequent, including mobile cameras.

Motorways and tolls

Motorways link Marrakech to Casablanca, Rabat, Fez, Tangier and Agadir. They are toll roads: take a ticket on entry and pay on exit. Keep some dirhams in cash, even though many toll stations also accept bank cards.

Fuel

Fuel stations are plentiful on main roads, rarer in the mountains and the south. They sell diesel (gasoil) and unleaded petrol. Check your car’s fuel type at handover and fill up before long drives into the Atlas or towards the desert.

Road tips

Avoid driving at night outside towns: pedestrians, animals and poorly lit vehicles are common. In town, use guarded car parks: attendants in vests are usual and ask for a small fee.
