About 200 km and 4 hours separate Marrakech from Ouarzazate. But this is more than a distance: it is one of Morocco’s most beautiful roads, across the High Atlas to the gateway of the desert.
The route over Tizi n’Tichka
The N9 leaves Marrakech heading south-east and climbs steadily into the High Atlas. The highest point is the Tizi n’Tichka pass at 2,260 m. The road is paved and in good condition but winding: allow about 4 hours without stops.
Leave early to enjoy the light and avoid mountain driving at night.
Stops you should not miss
After the pass, detour to Telouet and its kasbah. Then stop at the Ait Ben Haddou ksar, a UNESCO World Heritage site about 30 km before Ouarzazate. On arrival, the Atlas Studios and the Taourirt Kasbah are worth a visit.
Which car to choose
In the mountains, an SUV adds comfort, visibility and stability: 2026 Dacia Duster, Renault Kardian or Hyundai Tucson. For families or groups, the 7-seat Dacia Jogger has room for luggage. A city car is fine if you drive calmly.
Practical tips
